My seven-years-old son only speaks English. I thought my son would be bilingual before he was born. However, the thing was not easy. And I realized that it really needs patience. I have been teaching him a Japanese for long time. After he started going child day care, he became more familiar with listening and speaking English. He understands some Japanese words but he always responds me in English. Sometimes I get confuse when I having conversation with him in Japanese and English. It is very stressful. He also can not communicate with my family in Japan. Since he likes Nintendo games, I try to motivate him to learn Japanese to get a job at Nintendo when he grow up! One of the reason I decided to go back to school is that I really felt I need to improve my English for my son, when I realized it is difficult to communicate in Japanese. Because I felt that he won't be listen to me when he grow up if I don't speak English well. I hope he will be able to speak Japanese better by the time we go to Japan. Raising child in a different contry is really a big challenge.
My son is bilingual too and he speak my language perfectly, but it was not a easy to teach him, more he is in the school with kids more he feel comfortable to speak English.I can tell you how i did it.Every time my son tells me somthing pretend that i don't understand and i never responed on English language only my own and it seem to me that technic is working well, but you need lot of patience.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. For the kids who parents speak different language is so difficult to teach another language. My nephew is 5 years old he lives here since he was 3. Obviously he speaks spanish and now he speaks English too. However, he is speaking Spanish less and less everyday. His parents are worry about it because he speaks two languages and that is an advantage, but they don't want him to forget the Spanish.
ReplyDeleteEnglish is the most important language in the world but in my opinion everyone should learn their mother language. It is a question of your own culture. However it is not easy you should keep trying because later he will be glad that you did that.
